Chrome surges past Firefox to become world's no. 2 Internet browser

Google's Chrome has surpassed Mozilla's Firefox to become the world's number two Internet browser, behind Microsoft's Internet Explorer, reveals the latest stats released by StatCounter. According to the Ireland-based research firm, Chrome grabbed 25.69 per cent of the total market share in November, while Firefox managed a share of 25.3 per cent. It's notable it is the first time when Chrome has edged Firefox in the browser popularity wars. Both the browsers trail Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which has a 40.63 per cent of the market share worldwide.
"We can look forward to a fascinating battle between Microsoft and Google as the pace of growth of Chrome suggests that it will become a real rival to Internet Explorer globally," says Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter in a blog post. "Our stats measure actual browser usage, not downloads, so while Chrome has been highly effective in ensuring downloads our stats show that people are actually using it to access the web also."

Going by the StatCounter's stats, this is a massive accomplishment for the Google Chrome, which was launched just three years ago. It's notable that other browser, Opera, has been making efforts for a long time to join the top league but still has managed less than 2 per cent of the market share worldwide.
Net Applications' stats, however, suggest that Chrome needs to do a bit of work before grabbing the number two spot. According its stats, Firefox took home 22.14 per cent of the global share, while Chrome managed 18.18 per cent.

Google Chrome had hit 25% global market share milestone in September this year. The StatCounter stats revealed then Chrome had 25.02 per cent of market share, trailing Firefox's 30 per cent and Internet Explorer's 45 per cent. It was then speculated that Chrome would easily surpass Firefox in a month or so.
Microsoft Internet Explorer is at the top spot for now. In a blog post, Microsoft claims that the IE9 usage share on Windows 7 worldwide is higher than all the versions of Chrome and all versions of Firefox, trailing only to IE9.

Google+ Brand Pages: Multi-Admin Capability Coming Soon, Before 2012 !!

Google+ will allow multiple admins to manage a brand page “before 2012,” Kristoffer Sorensen, said on in a live Q&A on Wednesday. Kristoffer Sorensen is a Google marketing strategist.

Currently, brand pages can have only one admin. This is something really annoying if a page is managed by more than one person.

Google+ post
Multi-admin feature is surely gonna help Google+ brand page as this facility is something that Facebook pages already have and till now Google plus don't.

Another missing feature in Google plus Pages is that they can't be merged but two Facebook pages can be merged. Let's hope for this feature in future.

What else you are hoping from Google plus ?

YouTube, IPRS lock-in a licensing agreement

Popular destination for online videos, YouTube locked-in on a deal with the Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS), a non-profit making company looking after the copyrights for artists in India. The deal would now mean that the artists, who's content feature on YouTube will be able to earn their revenue off it. Artists, in this respect would mean songwriters, music composers and music publishers. With digital content growing by leaps in bounds, both in usage and popularity, this deal shows promise. The deal invariably means that the creators of original content will be rewarded with this revenue.

An official statement received in this respect reveals that while YouTube has locked-in on agreements with several music labels in India, before, this is the first time it has signed a deal with a collection society in the country. Earlier, YouTube only earned revenue when advertisements were displayed against its partner’s videos. This revenue would then be shared by its partners.

According to a statement provided by the CEO of the IPRS, Rakesh Nigam, "We are extremely delighted to do this deal with leading video site like YouTube, as this association will benefit our publishers/music companies, author and sister societies. As more users get online, consumption and monetization of music will increasingly happen on the internet and YouTube will drive it.

This deal follows YouTube's similar deals with ASRAC in Japan, KOMCA in Korea, CASH in Hong Kong, MUST in Taiwan, APRA-AMCOS for Australia/New Zealand, FILSCAP in the Philippines, and COMPASS in Singapore.

U.S. users spend more time on Facebook--on average 6.3 hours a month--than on any other site. The Harvard dropout is now creating his own monetary system, Facebook Credits, to facilitate transactions and profits. With a net worth of $17.5 billion, he is now America's 14th-richest man. 2011 Highlight: The movie inspired by his life, The Social Network, which depicts Zuckerberg as a coldhearted dweeb, won 3 Oscars."

Facebook's Two New Security Features 'App Passwords' & 'Trusted Friends' !!

Facebook on Thursday morning unveiled two new features aimed at making people feel more secure on the ever-growing social networking site.

Trusted Friends
In case you ever get locked out of your account. This features will help you prove your identity through your friends, you can now select three to five trusted friends who can help you if you ever have issues accessing your account. It's sort of similar to giving a house key to your friends when you go on vacation, pick the friends you most trust in case you need their help.

If you forgot your password and need to login but can't access your email account, you can rely on your friends to help you get back in. Codes will be sent to the friends you have selected and they can pass along that information to you.

App Passwords
This gives users the option to set additional unique passwords on Facebook apps. So if you have an app password added to, say, FarmVille, even if someone else is logged in to your Facebook account, they’ll need to know an additional password before they plant a field full of cupcakes.

Facebook Security"Security and safety are at the core of Facebook. We have entire teams dedicated to building tools that give people even more control over their account and specifically the way they access their information. In fact, many of our most talented engineers are working exclusively on creating a secure environment on Facebook. This October, as part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we are working with others in the community to help educate people about techniques and tools for securing your devices and networks. Additionally, we thought this would be a great opportunity to tell you about some of the systems working behind the scenes to keep you and your data safe."

Report: Malware Infection Rates Rise In India

Microsoft has just released its volume 11 of its Security Intelligence Report or SIR for the first and second quarter of 2011, which has published some alarming findings for India. While there has been a general trend in a decrease in malware infections globally, there appears to be an opposite trend in India.

Newer versions of Windows operating system have been found to be the least affected, possibly due to several vulnerabilities being patched in the newer releases. Similarly, 64-bit versions were found to be consistently less affected than 32-bit versions, possibly because of the more popularity of the latter, thus the reason why cybercriminals target them more.

Of the various threat types, Adware have been dominating, thanks to a new pair of families Win32/OpenCandy andWin32/ShopperReports.Other potentially unwanted software families such as Win32/Keygen which propagates through keygenerators, has also seen an increase in detections.

Worms and Trojan Downloaders & Droppers showed a downward trend, while viruses have been steadily accounting for at just under 5 percent of the total infections. The report notes that a change in behaviour of the AutoRun feature in older Windows could have contributed to the decline in the number of work families as a whole. Spyware infections have been the least bothering of all.

Malware Infection Rates Rise In India: Report

In India, the picture is completely different. Worms (38.3 percent) and Trojans (33.6 percent) infections are found to be the most common, while Adware is somewhere in the middle. Viruses also amount to around 25 per cent of all infections, although spyware infection levels are as low as worldwide. The report also stated that India hosted 11.003 percent of all spambot IP addresses in the second quarter of 2011, which is up from 10.895 from the previous quarter.

How does malware spread?

Malware Infection Rates Rise In India: Report

There are different ways in which malware threat propagation takes place.
* User Interaction Required: In this method, the user is prompted to perform an action for the computer to be compromised. In such cases, users may be unknowingly lured into performing these actions, such as making them believe that their system is infected, redirecting them to a website from where they are asked to download a malware masquerading as an anti-virus software to "cure" their "infected" system.
* AutoRun USB: With USB storage devices fast replacing optical media, the malware spreads through the AutoRun feature of Windows for such drives.
* Autorun Network: In this case, the AutoRun feature is applied to mapped infected network volumes.
* File Infector: The threat spreads by modifying files, usually application or executable files, also known by EXE, SCR, or DLL extensions. Codes in these files are overwritten by the infectious code to help propagate the malware.
* Exploit: Zero-day: Vendor has not released a security update to address the vulnerability at the time of the attack.
* Password Brute Force: Threats of these type, spread by attempting brute force password attacks on available volumes, such as by using the "net use" command.
* Office Macros: Threats also spread by infecting Microsoft Office documents with malicious VBA macros.
* Emails: Spam accounts for the most worldwide email traffic and naturally, malware proliferate.
* Malicious websites: Attackers are known to conduct phishing attacks and distribute malware using malicious websites, which appear completely legitimate, fooling the user into disclosing confidential information or even downloading a malware infected application, which then hijacks the system. Although mostly affecting financial websites, a sizeable phishing interest has been seen in social networking and gaming websites recently.

The report states that more than a third of the malware detections were attributed to malicious software that misused the AutoRun feature. 6 percent were found to be exploits or malicious code attempting to exploit vulnerabilities in the application or operating system. Adobe Reader documents have also been consistently found to be more likely to be vehicles of exploits, while the RTF or Rich Text Format was also found to be a likely candidate.

How to combat these security threats?
* Keep all software on your systems updated. This includes those related to the OS and also third party.
* It is better to use Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update, because the former updates all Microsoft software installed on the system including MS Office suite, while the latter updates only Windows operating system.
* Install an anti-virus software from a trusted vendor and keep it updated. Run periodic scans to ascertain the integrity of your system. A complete internet security suite is preferable because it takes care of almost all threats and is likely to include a competent firewall.
* Be cautious when you click on links in web pages, unless you know for sure that it is safe.
* Never download and open attachments before scanning them with the installed anti-virus.
* Avoid downloading pirated software because it has usually been found to be a vehicle of choice by cybercriminals.

Steve Jobs Death Has Been Exploited By Facebook Scammers

As has often happened after the death of a public figure, a scam was started on Facebook Thursday to exploit the death of Steve Jobs.
Claiming that free iPads were being given away in “in memory of Steve,” the Facebook page was quickly taken down after the media began to report on it.

People who clicked through were led to sites asking them to fill out surveys or sign up for free offers. Forbes points out that the scammers are paid affiliate fees for having brought traffic to the sites. A similar scam took place after singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her North London home in July. Links were posted on Facebook to videos of the “shocking” final moments before her death. Instead, people were led to survey sites. After the attacks in Norway, spammers posted a link to a video they said was captured of the blast. Those who clicked were taken to a fake YouTube site that asked users to take a long survey. And as the Occupy Wall Street protests continue, a Web site called OccupyParty.org has popped up that NPR reports appears to have been created to sell ads. Except a single YouTube video, no information about the protests is available on the site. The Steve Jobs Facebook page was one of about 100 pages created Thursday with the title “R.I.P Steve Jobs.” Most of the other pages were created by Jobs’ fans.
Update:-
AppSumo, a daily deals website for web applications and online services, sent out an e-mail last night to customers that used Steve Jobs’ name in the subject line, but had no mention of him in the main text. The subject line for the email, advertising a deal for font collections, read: “Steve Jobs was originally obsessed with typography.” AppSumo says the email was sent without realizing Jobs had died.

Enable new Timeline feature:The story of your Life!

Just few days back, facebook announced Timeline, a creepy look at everything that has ever happened in your Facebook lifespan. Its like a story book of your life. Facebook says that it would be on the way for everyone in the comming weeks but Techism let you get this new desing just right now. Yes we can make it work!
A few things to note:
  • You probably don’t want to do this unless you’re actually a developer. Expect bugs.
  • Only you will see your timeline at first (unless you decide otherwise), but will automatically go public after a few days.
  • It seems that if you login into Facebook on another machine, Timeline gets disabled automatically on all of your machines. With that said, it seems you can get back to your timeline (but ONLY after following the steps below) by navigating to http://www.facebook.com/YOURUSERNAMEHERE?sk=timeline
  • You’ll need to have a “verified” account for one of the steps, which means you need a credit card or phone number attached to the account.

Here’s How To Do It:

1. Log into Facebook
2. Enable developer mode, if you haven’t already. To do this, type “developer” into the search box, click the first result (it should be an app made by Facebook with a few hundred thousand users), and add the app.
3. Jump into the developer app (if Facebook doesn’t put you there automatically, it should be in your left-hand tool bar)
4. Create a new app (don’t worry — you wont actually be submitting this for anyone else to see/use). Give your shiny new app any display name and namespace you see fit. Read through and agree to the Platform Privacy agreement. This is the step you need to be verified for.
5. Ensure you’re in your new app’s main settings screen. You should see your app’s name near the top of the page
6. Look for the “Open Graph” header, and click the “Get Started using open graph” link.
Create a test action for your app, like “read” a “book”, or “eat” a “sandwich”
7. This should drop you into an action type configuration page. Change a few of the default settings (I changed the past tense of “read” to “redd” — again, only you can see this unless you try and submit your application to the public directory), and click through all three pages of settings

8. Wait 2-3 minutes

9. Go back to your Facebook homescreen. An invite to try Timeline should be waiting at the top of the page

And you’re done!
We have seen this works few time now, so it should work with everyone!
So have you upgraded to new Timeline? Let Us know in the comments section below.

British Dad Chokes Boy Who 'Killed' Him in Online War Game !!

A British man attacked a teenage boy who "killed" his character in an online computer war game, a court in southern England has heard.

Father-of-three Mark Bradford, 46, was awaiting sentencing Friday after he admitted storming round to the boy's home and grabbing him around the throat after the youngster teased him about winning "Call of Duty: Black Ops," the Plymouth Herald reported.

The boy, who has not been named, was playing the popular shooter game on his Sony PlayStation console on July 1 this year when he began competing with Bradford through the game's online multiplayer mode and using microphones to communicate, Plymouth Magistrates' Court was told.

Prosecutor Gareth Warden said, "Mr. Bradford was killed during the game and the boy called him a name."

Bradford then left his own apartment and went to the boy's address where he carried out the attack, which left a scratch and a reddening of the neck.

Bradford's lawyer, Tracey Baker, said he had mental health issues and "just lost it" after being provoked by the boy's name-calling.

He will be sentenced next month.

Twitter Releases Web Analytics Tool

How much traffic does your website receive from Twitter? Twitter Web Analytics, a new tool announced , should help provide some clarity to website owners who rely on the information network for content distribution.

Twitter Web Analytics is intended to give website owners more data on the effectiveness of their Twitter integration. It’s powered by BackType, the social analytics company that Twitter acquired in July.

Twitter Web Analytics, explains BackType founder and new Twitter platform staffer Christopher Golda, will help publishers and website owners understand three key things: How much of their content is being shared on Twitter, how much traffic Twitter is sending their way and how well Tweet Buttons are performing.

The tool is free and currently in beta. A small group of partners will gain access to Twitter Web Analytics this week, and Twitter will roll it out to all website owners in a few weeks. An API will also be released for developers.
